A man had had a very hard life, and he’d been walking through the forest, enjoying his day and eating as much as he could, but there was something wrong, something deep inside him was missing. He felt lonely. He had everything he needed. He lived a very calm life. It was peaceful up there in the woods, but he had all the food he needed, the berries, the fish, the sky, the nature, every single thing he needed, except he felt lonely. He missed companionship. So one day, he screamed out at God, and he said, God, if you’re listening, I’m gonna ask you for one thing. I want companionship. I want this loneliness to end. He kept walking for days and days, and then a wolf came upon him. The wolf, also lonely, became his friend, and they spent many days and weeks together, and the wolf would help him hunt and fish, and the wolf was extremely eager to please. He would continue to hunt, and he’d bring it to him, continue to hunt, and he’d bring it to him. But soon, he noticed that something was wrong in the wolf. The wolf was becoming quieter and quieter. He tried to get away from the wolf, and he soon realized that the more he tried to get away from the wolf, the closer he became to the wolf, and the wolf began to stalk him. And before, when he would stay up at night in protection, now he knew that the wolf was watching him at night while he was sleeping. The wolf wouldn’t let him go. He’d try to continue to leave, but now he’d become dependent on the wolf. And he’d forgotten how to fish on his own. He’d also become used to the companionship. In some ways, this was the definition of a toxic relationship, but between a man and a wolf. Who’d ever heard of such a thing? And as he continued to live and become more and more dependent on the wolf, one day he woke up with the wolf fighting him, and he asked God again, and he said, I understand now that there are some things that are far, far worse than loneliness. Living with the devil is far worse than living with no one at all.
