Near-ology. What's that?
It was summer 2023, and my friends dad was visiting from Perth Australia.
The guy had a farm, sheep. He was practically an 18th century land-owning lord. We talked a bit about our entrepreneurial ventures, and I told him about all the (interesting folks - nicest way of saying it) I'd met in my journey.
Vancouver you see, despite being a 21st century, ultra modern city. Still had the Wild-West feeling from the old days of Mining and Lumber. Wait did I say old days? That's still the main industry here. If you don't count money laundering from Real Estate deals.
I told him about the Venture funds here, that do copy-paste pump-and-dump on poor unsuspecting souls on the market. And he laughed.
"Oh I know how that works!" - he laughed. Like a man who knew how to turn dust into money.
"Shayan, have you ever heard of Near-ology?"
"No I answered. Never have." - Like a man who knew how to turn gold into dust.
"In Australia. The mining industry is similar to here. Before a big IPO, the Miners would say: 'Look here. There's a very productive mine NEAR the one we're going to explore!'" - he laughed
'What's the issue with that?' I asked. Gold turning into nothing underneath my feet.
"They never explore anything before the IPO. Why would they? If its near, its dear! If we explore, we might find out there's actually nothing!"
